this grilled tuna is really really delicious and super easy (make sure to marinate for at least an hour). this corn and tomato salad is perfect for the summertime — fresh and crisp and ideal for outdoor eating on a hot day. if grilling isn’t yo thang, this heirloom tomato pasta is one of the yummiest things ever (hopefully your farmer’s market is open for the summer and you can get some very very fresh tomatoes and basil). and also veggie kabobs (zucchini, onions, mushrooms, campari tomatoes, etc) and corn (shuck it, slather with butter, sprinkle on some cajun seasoning, put the leaves back up, wrap in aluminum foil, and grill baby grill) and applie pie of course and homemade popsicles and memorial day wouldn’t be memorial day without some delicious summery beers (we like anchor steam, harpoon ipa, and brooklyn summer ale) and maybe if you are lucky some delicious mojitos.
remember your sunscreen.

i would buy these shoes from swedish hasbeens:

you’ll remember that, some time ago, i declared ugly wooden soled shoes to be a priority for this summer (you do remember, don’t you?) under the assumption that i shop seasonally, of course, and have limitless swedish krona to throw about (233.349 dollars’ worth of krona, to be exact), these are the shoes whose ugly wooden soles i want to run around on.

hey diane remember that time we each spent like a million dollars in stockholm in three days?

anyhoo, swedish hasbeens introduces their company by way of this charming anecdote,

Her name was Anita and she was the hottest mum in all of southern Sweden in the 1970’s. While smoking Camel she screamed at her kids until her curlers fell out and just looked fabulous in her white high-heeled clogs.

and, monetary restrictions notwithstanding, we encourage you to think of anita, sweden’s hottest mum, and the 1970s in general (just not the disco parts), as you shop or don’t shop for this summer and next fall. think wide-legged pants, earth tones, and a very young anjelica huston.

oh anjelica, we ooze for you.

Hi friends.  I know I’ve been gone, but I’m baaack! due to (other than guilt and genuine interest in rekindling my blogging fire) my bro-friend David threatening to un-RSS feed me/festo, which seemed a fate too scary to face.

But really, to be honest, I’ve been kind of writer blocked.  Nothing in my life seemed worthy of festo.  Sad, I know.  Please accept my next few posts as small, humble, inane &/or materialistic offerings to the blogging gods as I get back into the groove… boy you gotta prove…

Dum dee dum, onto my comeback post.  My boss always jokes about her husband’s “uniform”: jeans and a black turtleneck, which he wore every day for the 6+ months he was on leave from a “real” job.  Now, all in all, not a bad idea- this so-called DIY uniform: go-to basics that can be accessorized any which way, are completely comfortable yet not sloppy, and can be worn to work (ha- not if you’re in financial services, suckas!).  This uniform concept is much easier in winter- jeans and/or leggings + sweater= not rocket science. However, in the summer, for us femmes, it becomes more challenging.  Look, dresses are cute and top contenders for uniform status: 1 piece and you’re out of the house!  But let’s face it, getting in, riding, & out of subway (up/down stairs) in a dress without flashing somebody, somewhere… is f*cking impossible.  I can’t be worrying about that every day! No no.  So, thank goodness shorts are “in” or whatever this season.

Without further ado… behold my summer uniform:

HAHA gotcha! These are the nineties-licious uniforms 17 year-old Sue Ellen made & showed off her in her absent mother’s backyard at a total rager-cum-fashion show which ended up saving the company she got a job at when the babysitter keeled over unexpectedly…

She’s right on top of that, Rose!

All jokes aside:

American Apparel Viscose Dolman Sleeve T, in white or slate

+

American Apparel Pique Bloomer Shorts, in black

Yup, you too can have your very own summer uniform, seeing as how its requisite pieces are sold at the reprehensible-yet-ubiquitous American Apparel!   The shorts are amazing, and only barely beat out these equally awesome black silk ones, thanks to their ELASTIC LEG OPENINGS.  That’s right- sometimes you think you’re safe, wearing shorts.  Sit however you want! Au contraire, mon petit cabbage.  With these on, you can actually sit however the hell you want on the subway without some perv/innocent bystander staring up them.  They don’t ride up either! Awesome!  The top is ever so slightly less awesome– it gets a little wrinkly (damn you viscose!) and is potentially hot for the true baking summer sun (BSS), but it goes day to night… to day (Ke$ha & autotune friendly suggest brushing your teeth with a bottle of Jack, FYI).  Plus the draping is a couple notches above your go-to t, so it’s office friendly.  Dave- are you bored yet? (Anyone ever notice how much I love parentheses!?)

May I recommend accessorizing with:

Steel Couture Mixed Media Necklace in Deco

or…

Might be McQueen, don’t know, but I bought my white skull silk scarf (peter piper…) at PinkyOtto

Got a better summer uniform? Let me know.

aaah felt good

update: noticed dear stef also posted on her summer basics: cut-out dress, boyfriend blazer (i hate the term too ugh), ugly shoes (they’re ugly), boater hat… hurray! now we’re just missing Diane’s summer uniform… and yours!

while watching endless summer, i came up with a brief sartorial summer to-buy list. this is it:

1. baggy cuffed denim shorts

2. super ugly pair of wooden-soled shoes

3. straw boater hat

4. a “boyfriend” blazer (i hate that phrase, it’s almost as bad as a “wifebeater” tank top)

5. cut-out dress

am also very into all the beige/off-white/white so-called minimalism going on. it’s trendy, but also elegant and pretty and super for the summertime, as long as your popsicle doesn’t drip on your shorts and ruin everything.

my father, an avid cyclist who’s been wearing spandex and shaving his legs since the early 70s, insists that adeline adeline (profiled in today’s nytimes) can’t possibly be a real bike store.

we beg to differ!

adeline adeline (147 reade street) was founded by a graphic designer who did not want a racing bicycle or a fixie and thus was forced to open her own store. the bicycles are super pretty — they’re inspired by the lovely vintage type bikes stylish ladies ride around amsterdam — and are meant to coordinate well with pretty dresses and shoes (bicycles can be accessories like any other) while also providing a comfy and enjoyable ride. (to prove it, customers are allowed to test-ride bikes around tribeca and in the nearby park before buying.) so the aesthetics of bike riding are fully embraced.

even better, for those of us whose concerned cyclist fathers are lurking in the background, there is a full service repair shop downstairs to prove that, although super stylish, adeline adeline is a real life bike store concerned with function as well as fashion.

BEST OF ALL the bicycles come in sizes, including sizes small enough for the shortest of ladies (eg under 5′ 3″, which hopefully includes those who are a mere 4′ 11 1/2″).

oh oh and, even better than best of all, the bicycles are really very affordable. the dutchie 1 (pictured below), for example, is only $399. hooray fashion!

zero waste home is a blog (and a lifestyle) by a crazy thoughtful woman in california who, along with her family, produces no garbage. whatsoever. hell yeah!

if, like me and many i know, you do not live on your own or do not have a lot of money, the idea of completely eliminating garbage from your life seems daunting. when i think of no waste i think first of food and the packaging it comes in, so alright, i’ll try to buy fresh produce and stuff like that that comes without wrappers. which is impossible unless you buy everything in bulk but even then you need to find something to hold the food in besides the plastic bags they have at the store etc etc. and then you get into the nitty gritty of it all and realize that pens, when they run out of ink, are trash. and so are drinks in plastic cups at parties and the cardboard that paperclips come in etc etc. and if you continue to read the blog you’ll find even more items that bea, the writer, makes sure will never ever enter her home.

so while she’s taken the idea of zero garbage to an extreme it’s still a worthwile read because, at the least, it will lead you to be a bit more mindful in your consumption habits. personally i have a bad habit of always putting produce in a plastic bag at the supermarket, even if i’m only getting like three apples or an orange whose peel i won’t be eating anyway. and if i am aware of every little decision like this (if we are all aware, i mean) then slowly but surely everything is a choice, and you can choose to buy the products you feel comfortable with and the ones which represent companies with the same no-garbage scruples as you.

and then slowly but surely we’ll stop buying from companies who waste energy on excessive shipping and then we’ll all support local food economies and eat cheese from the cows down the street etc etc.

and then lalala we’ll close our eyes one night and wake up the next morning and there’ll be flowers and butterflies and unicorns and no pollution anywhere.
